GRADES 4-5

QUICK RECALL RULES RECAP

1.    Quick Recall consists of two ten-minute halves, or thirty questions per half, whichever comes first.

2.    Each half begins with a toss-up question.  Each toss-up question is worth one point.  On a toss-up question any member

of either team can buzz in. The first student to buzz in is recognized by the spotter.  Do not answer until your name is said

by the spotter.  A contestant may buzz in and interrupt the reading of a toss-up question, but if he/she hesitates or gives

an incorrect answer, the interrupted question is read again solely for the other team, who can buzz in and

       answer.

3.    After a toss-up question is read to its entirety, contestants have ten seconds to buzz in, and must answer immediately

after being recognized by the spotter.

4.    There is no penalty for an incorrect answer.   If a toss-up question is not answered correctly by either team, another

        toss-up question is asked.

5.    There should be no oral or written conferring among team members on toss-up questions.

6.    Toss-up questions, which are read in their entirety, but answered incorrectly, are not reread.  The opposing team has ten

seconds to buzz in, and must answer immediately after being recognized   by the spotter.

7.    The team of the contestant who correctly answers the toss-up question is awarded a bonus question.  Team members may

confer, but the answer must be given by the captain.

8.    Teams are given ten seconds to begin to answer a bonus question.

9.    Fractions must be reduced to lowest terms but need not be given in mixed numeral form.

10.  If a team fails to answer its bonus question, or answers its bonus question incorrectly, the bonus question "bounces back"

to the other team.  After an incorrect question or bonus time expires the moderator turns to the other team and states

"Incorrect.  Captain?" or " Time.  Captain?” at which time that team's captain immediately gives the answer or

hesitation will be called.  The captain must wait to be recognized on the bounce-back.

On bonus questions (both regular and bounce-back) the captain may designate someone else to respond.  If the captain

wishes to designate another student, the captain must say, “I designate (student name).”  That student must begin his or

her response IMMEDIATELY.  If not, a hesitation is called.  No additional time is given.  The responding student still

must begin the answer before the response time is over.

On a bonus, if a team interrupts the question with an incorrect answer the question is now read in its entirety for the

other team, with the ten-second-response time given.

Each team may (and should) confer during a bonus question.

11.  Answers given prior to recognition by the spotter, after expiration of time, by the wrong person, after a hesitation, or

after oral or written conferring, will be ignored by the moderator.

12.  Match timing is ABSOLUTE.  If the half time or match time expires during a response, the officials consider only the

portion of the response heard before the expiration of time.

13.  Ties are decided in overtime. Overtimes are conducted in the toss-up/bonus format. The first team to score five points is

the winner.   An overtime begins with a toss-up question.
